Tips for dog and children interaction
Walk slow, never run up to a dog.
- Don’t scream and shout around dogs. If you startle them they may snap at you.
- If you see a dog you would like to pet, first ask the owner. If they say no, don’t touch the dog. If they say yes, then calmly walk up to the dog. Let the dog sniff you before you slowly extend your hand. Don’t grab or pull at his tail he’s not a toy he’s a friend. Pet gentle and no hugs.
- Dont reach over the head of a dog or touch him from behind until he has had a chance to sniff you. Best places for petting are under his chin or on his chest.
- Never tease a dog. First of all teasing is mean. You wouldn’t want your friend to bully you so don’t do it to your furry friend. So no pretending to bark or flaying about. Pet gentle, never yell or kick the dog. You don’t want to have an angry dog.
- Leave the dog alone while he’s eating. Sometimes dogs can become territorial about their food, bones and toys. If the dog has something he shouldnt have, never grab it. Go tell an adult.
- Don’t run away from dogs; as they may give chase. If this happens stop and make “like a tree.” Cross your arms with your hands and shoulders and don’t stare directly at the dog.
- If a dog barks or growls at you; look away. Slowly step away sideways until he relaxes or he’s out of sight.
- If a dog attacks you “be a ball.” Lay down on the ground and curl up like a ball with your hands over your head. Lie still and don’t scream or shout.
- If you get bit immediately tell an adult. Try to remember what color his fur was, how big, where it took place and if anyone saw it happen.
- If you see dogs fighting never try to break it up. Go get help.
- If a dog looks sick, injured or looks like a stray don’t touch him. He might be carrying a disease. Find an adult.
- If a child doesn’t follow these rules; place him in a time out or repeat to your child ”look with your eyes not your hands.”
